What the law is saying is that, to be able to make money, you must choose a subject to set up your blog or website on, which must have appreciable number of people interested in it. They should also have a good record of spending money, and the level of competition in the industry should be low.

It is at this foundational stage that a lot of new comers to the Internet miss it. Perhaps, it is as a result of the misinformation they got from certain sources that they could set up blogs or websites on the area of their passion, and they would be able to make money from it.

This is true, but to an extent. If the subject you are passionate about shows that a large volume of people are interested in it, and these people actually spend money in the industry, then that would be a great subject to set a blog or website on.

But, if the subject does not draw the interest of more than a handful of people, then it would be a waste to invest your time and energy in it because it would never make money. Money is made from people who are interested in your subject, and the larger their number, the more the chance of making money from their patronage.

Therefore, the first thing you should do before starting a website or blog is to do some research to know if your area of passion has good volume of interested people, and if they spend money, as well as if the level of competition in the industry is low.

If your findings are positive, then, you could go ahead and set up your site knowing you could make money from it. but, if they are not, it will be better to either look for a profitable niche in that industry, or find another subject entirely.

I will show you how you can do this research using a free, but powerful software.

The Google keyword research tool, which you can find at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal, can enable you to know before hand whether the subject you are about going into will be profitable or not.

This is how to do the research.

Log on to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal, type in the subject you have in mind, for instance, golf training, then click enter.

The software comes out with the result as shown below.

This shows the level of searches made the previous month, and the average global monthly searches made in the last 12 months. You can also see the level of competition in the industry. The result also include related keywords to golf training, e.g., golf training aids, and golf swing training.

To get the above statistical result in terms of numbers, what you should do is to highlight the result page, then copy and paste it in a notepad. The statistical result for golf training is shown in a notepad below.

Now you can see the actual number of searches for golf training last month 201,000, and the average monthly searches in the last 12 months 135,000.

And also, very importantly, you can see how much people are bidding on the keyword golf training $2.03. What that means is that at the time I wrote this article, the average amount of money advertisers are paying per click when anyone clicks on their advert on this keyword is $2.03.

This is big money to spend on one click, so if there were 100 clicks on their adverts in a day, they would be paying $203.

What this implies is that people who are interested in golf training are money spenders. For someone to be paying $2.03 for a click on his or her advert means that that person knows he or she will make back the money together with profit from his or her target market – those looking for golf training.

And that is possible because those looking for golf training are people who are not just looking for free stuff, but are prepared to buy things relating to golf training.

This is how you can find out about the subject you want to get into first before setting out. Generally, keywords with average bidding of $0.50 and above will be profitable subjects to set up blogs or websites on, and of course, the higher the average bidding, the greater the money that can be made from that industry.

And when you combine the average bidding on the keyword with the average monthly search volume in the last 12 months, you will have a clear picture of what the industry looks like in terms of profitability.

Looking at the average monthly search volume for golf training, which is 135,000 and the bidding per click of $2.03, it means that the subject, golf training, is profitable.

But note that if the monthly volume of searches for the keyword is high, as well as the average bid on it, the possibility of stiff competition in that industry will be high too.

Therefore, in choosing a subject for your blog or website, you don’t only consider the search volume and average bid on it, but also the level of competition in the industry.

This is important if you hope to gain free traffic from search engines such as google and yahoo.

If the competition is very high, it would be extremely difficult for a newbie to compete with the established gurus who may have optimized their sites strongly for the search engines and ranking very highly.

However, you can still go ahead if you wish, to compete with the big guns, but you should be prepared to make serious investment in certain tools and materials, and patiently build your site.

But this is not the best way to go about having a money making site as a beginner, there is an easier way to achieving your goal of making money with blogs or websites even if strong competition exist in your subject area.

The best thing to do is to look within the industry for a niche that is not too competitive, but that has appreciable search volume and bidding level. With such a niche, you could still make money with your site without the danger of been crushed by heavy competition.

In fact, if you could pick a great niche, in terms of low competition, high search volume, and high bid level, and build your blog or website continually over time, you could become the niche leader, taking in much of the organic traffic from search engines to that niche, which could run into hundreds of thousands every month, and making the most money in the industry.

This is how to check the level of competition, to be sure you are not starting a blog or website that will never see the ray of the sun because there are huge trees taking up every available space in the sky.

Go to Google search engine at google.com and type in the keyword or the subject of your propose blog, e.g., golf training.

As you can see below, 68,100,000 web pages are brought out in the result (as at the time of doing this writing).

These are the pages the search engine could find in the entire worldwide web that have the words, “golf training” in them. This number is an indication of competition, but don’t panic, it is not a strong determinant of competition or whether your site can make money or not.

Here is how to know how strong the competition is, and if your website or blog could ever come up in good position on the major search engines, and take in huge traffic, which would therefore enable you to make money.

Individually, take the websites that appear on the first page to http://whois.domaintools.com. Copy and paste their URL in the search box, and click the “Lookup” button.

Some of the information whois.domaintools.com will provide you about the websites are their degree of search engine optimization (SEO), Alexa page rake, and inbounds links. To see their Google page rank, if you don’t have the tool on your browser, you can use the website: www.prchecker.info/check_page_rank.php

If all or most of the first ten web pages from google search result have very high degree of SEO (from 85 upwards), page rank (from 5 upwards), and hundreds of inbound or incoming links, it means the competition is extremely tough and there may not be any chance for a new site to come up on the first page of google when anyone searches for its keyword.

So, if you find your subject in such competition, you shouldn’t go ahead to set up a site on it if you desire traffic from the search engines (even if the subject is highly profitable) because you may never get it.

You will have to look for a less competitive niche, where the first web pages on google search result are page rank 3 or 4 and below, less degree of SEO, and not much incoming links.

However, if you plan to source traffic from other sources and not from the search engines or Pay Per Click, PPC, then you can go ahead to set up your site in a profitable subject, even if competition is strong – you will not be competing with them anymore.

If you have been on the Internet for some time, and you haven’t made a dime or made the money you can be proud of from your blog or website, it means you are not operating your blog in the way that it could make you money. You may be going against the laws of making money with blogs or websites and you don’t know it.

There is a way through which you can make money from your blog or website, outside which you will never make money. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve set up the blog, it will just remain there as quite as the graveyard.

In fact, some people have abandoned their blogs after a couple of weeks of setting them up when they didn’t see money in their adsense or affiliate account. Forgive me for this if you are one of these sets of my esteemed readers, I will now explain what blogs are.

A blog is a content management system. A content management system means that you can publish your articles, pictures (or images), videos, and audios, edit them, add links, and do other things, and have them displayed on the Internet by a click for people to read or view.

A blog enables you to publish whatever you want on the Internet without needing to have knowledge of HTML or how to design and run websites, to be able to do so. Before blogs were invented, you would need websites if you desired to publish contents on the Internet, but now ordinary folks have become online publishers using blogs.

Blogs are very easy and simple to use and edit. All you need to do is to log in to your blog after you have set it up with your user name and password, and from your dashboard you will find the different links to where you will be able to edit anything, post your articles, insert pictures, codes, etc that you want to show. Everything is done from one spot, and that’s why it is a system that manages web contents.

One of the things you can easily notice in blogs is that after reading a post, you can make your comment about it. If approved, you will see your comment, as well as other people’s comments appearing.

By reading other people’s comments, and the blog owner’s response, in addition to the original article, you can get a great deal of information about that topic on that blog. This is why blogs have become very popular with most Internet users who use the Internet mainly to get information.

Initially, that is, at the beginning of blogs, people used it as an online diary, where they post contents daily relating to their daily activities. They shared with their readers their experiences, their love, pains, and joys, their mistakes or weakness and their strength.

Today, a lot of people use blogs differently. They set up blogs on subjects they have knowledge of or experience in, or subjects they can research and provide contents for even though they are not experienced in them.

As people come to read their blogs, they will then be able to make money from the blogs through the monetization strategies they are using. Blogs are free to set up, however you will need to pay for domain name registration and a hosting service to be able to install your blog. If you intend to use a free blog, such as blogger.com, which I don’t encourage for a number of reasons, which I have written about in some of my previous posts, you will get the hosting free on blogger.com’s subdomain.

There are different platforms, which provide blogs for people to use for free. These include WordPress, b2evolution, and nucleus. Of these, WordPress is widely acclaimed to be the best.

They have thousands of free themes and plugins people can use to make their blogs highly functional and professionally looking. I will explain what themes, plugins and widgets are:

Themes: as used in blogging, themes are the different designs and looks of blogs. WordPress provides thousands of free themes you can customize and use.

Plugins: plugins are small pieces of software created to provide additional functionality to blogs. For instance, you can install a plugin that allows pictures of visitors to your blog who make comments on your posts to show as I have on this blog.

Click on the Dashboard, Click on Layout.

You will see areas where you have “Add a Gadget”. These are the spaces where you can add images (that’s pictures), or codes.

Click on the “Add Gadget” of your choice. A page will open showing the different items you can add there, about 19 of them, including picture, and Adsense.

To paste a Picture: Scroll down, you will see “Picture”. Click on it.

Highlight “From Your Computer” if the picture is in any of your computer directories, such as the desktop or my document.

Click on Browse, and locate the picture.

When you find the picture, click on it, and click Open.

The picture will be attached to your blog at that location.

To Paste Adsense Code: Follow the same procedure as above when you sign into your blog.

Click on the Dashboard, Click on Layout, Click on where you have “Add a Gadget”, another page will open showing the different items you can add there.

Scroll down, you will find Adsense, Click on it and fill the short form that appears,  which requires you to state the following: the email you used to sign up for your Adsense account;  the zip code you used in signing up for your Adsense account; and the last five digit numbers of your phone number that you used in signing up for your Adsense account.

After you have done this, you Adsense will begin to show.

It is also the same procedure to follow to paste any affiliate product’s code to you blog.

To paste or edit your picture On your Profile Page, follow this procedure:

Sign into your blog, and from the Dashboard, click on “Edit Photo”

Scroll down, you will see “Photograph”.

Highlight “From Your Computer” if the picture is in any of your computer directories, such as the desktop or my document.

Click on Browse, and locate the picture.

When you find the picture, click on it, and click Open.

Your picture will be attached to your blog for visitors to see on your profile page.

If you want to take blogging seriously you must own your domain name and have the freedom to use your blog the way you feel like.

You cannot sell it if you feel you don’t want to operate it again, because it is technically not yours.

For instance, it will seem a Herculean task to be able to insert pictures and other images to your blog, sign up, generate affiliate codes, and post them at desired positions on your blog. And if you are not careful, you might mess up certain codes and your blog will come up the ugliest in the blogosphere. You could even obliterate your blog by a little mistake.

I want to share with you tips you can use to gradually learn the ropes of administering your blog, without running into big errors that could cost you so much in the efforts and time you have put into building the blog, as well as in monetary terms.

Explore your Blog

A lot of bloggers don’t know more than posting articles on their blogs. They never take the time to go through the links in the admin interface to see what they look like or represent. If you want to attain mastery in administering your blog, you need to patiently log into it and explore its features. You need to familiarize yourself with the name each feature is called, and the function they perform in the blog.

Know What You Are Doing

You cannot afford to administer your blog on trial and error basis. You must know why you want to make any changes, how to do it right, and what result to expect. You must also know how to retrace your steps if things didn’t work out as expected.

Have A Back Up

Before making any changes to your blog, it is wise to have a backup. You can copy the page or part of the page you want to make changes on and paste it on a note pad and save. Just in case you went wrong, you would still have the original copy to paste back and have your blog safely as it was before.

It is very important that you have a back up copy before editing your blog because once you have updated it, you cannot undo the changes. The only way you could bring it back to its initial position is if you have a backup copy to paste.

Be Open To Learning New Things

Generally, to be successful as a blogger and make money with your blog, you must be someone who is receptive to learning something new and applying it. Although you don’t need web programming and computer skill to make money blogging, it is however helpful to know some html codes, and how to edit images using Photoshop.

It is also an advantage if you know how to use any web editor, such as Frontpage to generate required html codes that you can use to edit your blog however way you want to.

Get And Read Necessary Materials

A lot of quality information is available on the Internet that you can get to educate you on any aspect of blogging you may be interested, and some of these materials are even given out for free.

But the real problem is that most newbie bloggers don’t read these things even when they have them. If you desire to grow quickly in your blogging endeavour, you must read up as much information you can get. When I began blogging newly I never thought I would get to understand
How the Internet works as much as I do today.

I can remember reading about SEO and couldn’t make any meaning of it. But today, due to consistent reading the topic from several experts, learning something unique from each of them, I have not only understood the subject, but have become an expert in it.

You Need A Coach

Anyone starting out in a field they are not used to certainly need a coach to guide them through. A coach is someone who has passed through that area and has a great deal of knowledge that could help the student avoid terrible mistakes and achieve success quicker than if left to do it on their own.

Of all the points I’ve treated, this is most important. Without a knowledgeable guide to put you through, it may be very difficult for you to be able to administer you blog successfully.

I don’t know what I could have done without someone to coach me when I was starting my blogging career. If you use WordPress, you would be aware that they have got a new version now, which they advise users to upgrade to.

Like some people that I know, I was initially skeptical about going ahead to upgrade, not sure if I will not lose my files, including all my contents. But, after going through the tutorials Word Press provides to make the upgrade trouble free several times to be sure I understood every thing to the letter, I was convinced I could get it done without any problem.

You see, I have worked hard on this blog and it is beginning to increase in google ranking, with a ranking of 3, which I plan to get to six before this year ends. It will not be funny if I ended up losing it simply because of a mistake in upgrading my Word Press blog – this was why I was initially foot dragging on the upgrade.

Even after satisfying myself that I understood the set up tutorial from Word Press, I still called on a friend who is very knowledgeable about WordPress and blogging generally. Fortunately for me, he had recently successfully upgraded his blog to the new version.

He recommended I used Word Press automatic upgrade plugin, which was what he used.

The Process Of Upgrading My Blog To WordPress 2.7

I found the plugin when I made a search for it from WordPress plugin directory http://www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ and downloaded it to my desktop.

It was in a zipped folder, so I had to unzip it. Then I opened my ftp software. By the way, I use coreftp, which is an excellent File Transfer Protocol software. I have been using it for some months now and I haven’t had any problem with it. It’s very simple to understand and easy to use. So, even though I don’t have any affiliation with them I recommend it to you.

If you don’t know what ftp is, it is a software used to upload files to your hosting server. To be able to upgrade your blog to WordPress 2.7, you will need to use an ftp software. And like I’ve said, coreftp is excellent and you can download and install a free copy from their site, www.coreftp.com.

Using my ftp software, I uploaded the WordPress automatic upgrade plugin to the ‘plugin folder’, which is located in my WordPress folder. This is how I did the upload:

After opening my ftp software, I clicked on my www. folder which is my blog’s root directory, where there is the WP-content folder, among other folders and files. By clicking on the WP-content folder revealed the plugin folder. Then I uploaded the WordPress automatic update plugin to the WP- content folder in my hosting server.

After the successful upload, I found the automatic update plugin in the plugin section in my blog. I activated it and followed the steps it outlined to update my blog to 2.7.

They were simple and easy to understand instructions to follow. The plugin has the ability to backup your blog’s files and folders so that if something should go wrong in the updating process you will not lose your blog’s contents. It is important you don’t skip the step of allowing the plugin to backup your blog.

There were about three steps the plugin took me through in the process of updating my blog, before the final step, which was to complete the update.

From what I had read in the WordPress update tutorial, which is provided to enable people update their blogs successfully, I was expecting that after I had clicked on the last button to complete the update process, I would be taking to a page where I will receive further information to allow me log into my updated blog.

But what happed shocked me. A blank page came up instead. Initially, I thought my Internet connection had broken, but that wasn’t the problem, the Internet connection was working perfectly well.

I typed in the url of my blog in the browser, again, only a blank page came up. I rushed to another computer, typed in my url, and again, the same blank page was what showed up – no further instruction was given.

I was griped with fear when it dawned on me that I may have just lost my blog, a number 3 page ranking blog that I have laboured to build, a blog with great promise for the future!

I quickly called my friend to tell him what happened. He didn’t know what could have happened as he didn’t obviously experience what had happened to me. However, been a great friend that he is, he promised to look at it later.

But I was still terribly worried. The worry would have been less if it had also happened to my friend, for he would have easily known what to do. Again, it would have been less if I had manually backed up my blog, instead of using the plugin to do it, which I’m not sure it did.

Some time later, as I looked on my desktop, I saw a ray of hope. There was a backup folder of my blog on the desktop – it was really spirit lifting to know the plugin had actually saved a copy of my blog, and that I hadn’t lost it afterall!

Then I thought of looking at my ftp to see what had happened to my www. folder in my server. Again, to my pleasant surprise, everything was as it was before I started the upgrade, in addition to all folders and files remaining the same, there was also a zipped folder of the new WordPress version 2.7 saved there.

Quickly, I downloaded and unzipped it. There was a read-me file in it, which explained how I could go ahead to upgrade my blog, however, their advanced tutorial on how to upgrade to 2.7, which can be found at http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended is more detailed.

I had to upload the new WordPress folder to my server in place of the old. But I had to be careful not to delete or overwrite certain files and folders, while deleting others.

The advanced tutorial spelt out clearly the folders and files in the old WordPress folder to delete and replace with those from the new WordPress, and the ones that must remain from the old WordPress:

DO NOT DELETE these folders and files:

* wp-config.php file;
* wp-content folder;
* wp-images folder–only older installations from 1.5.x days will have this folder;
* wp-includes/languages/ folder–if you are using a language file, and it is here rather than in wp-content/languages/, do not delete this folder (you might want to move your language files to wp-content/languages/ for easier upgrading in the future);.
* .htaccess file–if you have added custom rules to your .htaccess, do not delete it;
* Custom Content and/or Plugins–if you have any images or other custom content or Plugins inside the wp-content folder, do NOT delete them.

Delete these Files and Folders:

* wp-* (except for those above), readme.html, wp.php, xmlrpc.php, and license.txt; files; Typically files in your root or wordpress folder. Again, don’t delete the wp-config.php file.
* wp-admin folder;
* wp-includes folder; If you have a language file here, remember not to delete the wp- includes/languages/ folder
* wp-content/cache folder; You only see this folder if you are upgrading FROM WordPress 2.0.
* wp-content/plugins/widgets folder; You only see this folder if you previously installed the Sidebar Widgets plugin. The Sidebar Widgets code conflicts with the built-in widget ability.

Again, I met another challenge when I attempted to delete some folders that had items in them using ftp. Most ftps, including the one I use don’t allow deletion of folders that are not empty. To find a way around this, I went to their website, i.e., www.coreftp.com and from their Q & A page I found the solution.

I had to right click on the folder I wanted to delete. From the drop down menu that came up, I located Directory Command, then List Mode, and then I chose Advanced.

Doing that for each folder I needed to delete enabled me to delete them. And after uploading the required folders and files from the New WordPress version 2.7, my blog had been successfully upgraded to Word Press 2.7.

What a joy that filled my heart when my blog started showing immediately again after I pointed it to /wp-admin/upgrade.php!

That was my experience of upgrading my WordPress blog to the new 2.7 version. You can draw from my experience to upgrade yours successfully if you haven’t done so already.

Before you answer the question, let me congratulate and welcome you to 2009! With all the challenges and difficulties 2008 might have presented, thank God you survived it and are here at the beginning of a new year with an opportunity to begin afresh.

Whatever the challenges might be, because you have made a goal, and your eyes are fixed on the result you are expecting, you will find the inner power to go on and eventually overcome the challenges.

Setting our goals for the new year also enables us to be focused on getting result on the most important aspects of our lives where we need a change. Been focused is crucial to achieving anything meaningful, whether on the Internet or offline.  

And particularly on the Internet, with the loads of money making opportunities that usually flood one, without a focus, one can find themselves switching from working on one opportunity to the other without meaningful result to show for it at the end of the day.

Maintaining focus as we strive to make money online is as important to new comers to the Internet as it is to experienced online money makers. This was the question a student of mine asked me a few days ago. I have only set up a blog for him a couple of days before, and admiringly, he had started posting articles to it as I advised. But it didn’t seem like anybody was reading his posts as he couldn’t see any money showing in his Adsense account.

Naturally he was worried and not sure whether he wasn’t wasting his time; whether all the talk about making money from blogging was really true.

If you can afford it, this is the easiest way, I think, to ensure your blog never run dry of articles. All you do is find good freelance writers and give them the topics you need articles on. You will have the copyright to the articles as the writers would have agreed to this, and so you are sure of having original articles for your blog.

In addition, no other person can post the articles on their sites without your consent. Elance and a number of places are where you can find writers to do such job for you.

Hiring Freelance Bloggers

As is becoming common these days, you can simply hire a freelance blogger to be making post to your blog. You will have to be sure the blogger understands your writing style and is able to make their posts as though you were the one doing it yourself.
