How Much Money Can I Sell My Blog For?
Monday, December 29th, 2008This is a question I often get asked, and I will like to provide in-dept answer as I can here.
Yes, you may decide to sell off your blog at some point, and it is possible to get people to buy it from you. Places where you can sell or even buy websites or blogs include sendo.com.
In fact, some bloggers’ strategy is to start a blog, build it to some level and sell it off, set up another, build it and sell it off later at a big profit. At the end of the year, they would have accumulated some good money from the project.
Now back to the question of how much money you can sell your blog for.
Actually, I will not be able to give a fix amount because it depends on a number of factors. However, you will be able to sell your blog from a couple of hundreds of dollars to tens and even hundreds of thousands of dollar.
Here are the factors that may affect how much money you can sell your blog for:
The Value Of Your Domain Name
Your domain name is the name that you register for your blog. It is your blog’s business name, which is also your blog’s url. For example, my blog’s domain name is moneyway-online.com. Once you register a name, no other person can have exactly that name again.
Your domain name will determine how much money you can sell your blog for for the following reasons:
Search engine friendliness. If your potential buyer is going to depend on the search engines for traffic to their blog, then they would want to buy a domain name that is optimized for the search engines by having the necessary keywords in it.
And of course, almost everyone looks to the search engines for traffic, because search engines are the biggest source of free traffic anyone can pull to their blogs or websites.
Sadly to say, a lot of beginner bloggers usually register domain names that are not in any way optimized for the search engine, and are therefore not buyable.
Relevance to business. If your domain name is not relevant to your potential buyer’s business, it may not be possible to sell it. For instance if your domain name is “yourname.com”, except your name is a celebrity name, no one will likely buy it.
Another example is when your domain suggests a restriction to a particular region. For instance, if your domain is businessnigeria.com, you have eliminated potential buyers that are interested in blogs that cater for global business.
In a nutshell, if your desire is to build and later sell off your blog, you will first need to research profitable keywords that are relevant to your target business for your domain name before registering it.
The Amount Of Content On Your Blog
The more the content you have on your blog, the more valuable it is. If someone is buying it, the person also acquires the articles, which they can use to pull in traffic, retain visitors, create products, etc. Indeed, quality content is a huge asset to the buyer.
The Amount Of Traffic
The higher the amount of traffic a blog is having, the bigger the amount of money you will be able to sell it for. A site that is generating hundreds of thousands of traffic monthly can sell for millions of dollars.
This is because the buyer is saved from the work of building traffic, and can easily monetize the huge inflow of traffic to the site and rake in millions of dollars in a short while.
The Google Page Ranking Of The Blog
The Google page rank of a site or blog is the number ranging from zero to 10, which Google gives the site to indicate how relevant the site is to searchers looking for information relating to what the site contains.
Sites or blogs with higher page ranking will come up tops in search engines compared to sites with less page ranking. And that means the highly ranked sites or blogs will stand better chance of having traffic from the search engines.
Therefore, if you build your blog to a high page rank, it is possible for you to be able to sell it in the tune of thousands of dollars.
To attain high Google page rank, it takes a combination of optimizing your blog and contents for search engines.
Those are the possible factors that may determine how much money you can sell your blog for. But before I end this article, I want to state that you can not sell a free blog. I mean if you own a free blog from blogspot for example, with the url also containing blogspot or the name of the free blog giver, you will not be able to sell such domain names.
